What is Ghutrah?
A Ghutrah is a rectangular piece of cloth worn by Arab men, who dress modestly from head to toe and wear this piece of cloth on their head as a symbol of pride in their culture. It is usually called a “Ghutrah” or “Keffiyeh.” The Ghutrah is secured by a string known as the “agal” that secures the headdress in its place. The Keffiyeh, or Ghutrah Dubai, is a traditional Arab coat made of a square piece of fabric that is primarily worn by Arabic or Kurdish males.
Why wear Ghutrah?
Arabic men also wear Ghutrah to protect themselves from the heat of the burning sun. The headdress’s dazzling hue serves to reflect the sun’s heat as well as the body’s coolness, while providing total coverage for the neck and face, preventing sunburn. This item of clothing is required to protect humans from extreme heat, sandstorms, and temperature drops at night in desert regions such as those found in the Northeast. Some people also consider it a source of pride. This Saudi headdress, just like a king’s crown, looks absolutely stunning on the head of an Arab man.
Ghutra's History
Many people are unaware that the current favourite in the Kingdom, the red and white-checkered Ghutrah, has its origins in faraway London. It just came to Saudi Arabia a few decades ago. Many Saudi males also wear white Ghutrah, which is paired with Takeyah (also known as Kufyah), which is worn on the head beneath the Ghutrah, and black Eqal. The Ghutrah is a square fabric that is folded into a triangle.
Covering one’s head was a part of a man’s daily practise in old Arabia, even before the introduction of Islam. Many people believe the headpiece was influenced by the heat. The first documented images of Arabia depicted males wearing a piece of fabric with varied colours on top of their heads, held in place by a band. Back then, there were no fashionable white or red-and-white-checkered Ghutrahs. But now, Ghutrah has become a prime part of Saudi Arabian men’s clothing.
