Sudanese Toub
What is Sudanese Toub?
In the late 18th century, prosperous merchants in Darfur clothed their wives and daughters in large swaths of imported linen, cotton voile, and silk as a sign of wealth and prestige. In Sudan, fashion delves into a kaleidoscope of patterns and colors of the toub – the traditional garment for women from all tribes and corners of Sudan. A toub traditionally spans four and a half glorious metres of cloth that is elegantly wrapped around the body and head. Its width is around a metre, depending on a person’s height.
What is Sudanese Toub Made of?
Since Sudan has a hot and humid climate, fashion revolves around cotton and natural fibers. Most Sudanese people would prefer light clothing to feel comfortable. Sudanese toub, which is worn by women is mostly made up of cotton fabrics. Swiss Voile fabric which is made of 100% fine long-staple cotton is the best material for making Sudanese toub and has been in use for more than 100 years now.
How is Sudanese Toub made?
World’s best Swiss Voile Sudanese toub is made up of 100% fine long staple cotton which is grown in very few areas across the world. Egypt’s Giza cotton and India’s DCH cotton are very famous for making fine long staple cotton yarn.
Sudanese toub as elegant as it looks is as difficult to make and any manufacturer involved in making original 100% Cotton Swiss Voile Sudanese Toub will be following the stringent process as mentioned below:
1. Sourcing – A long staple 100% cotton yarn is sourced from the Spinning mills of India and Egypt in the counts of 100/1 NE, 105/1 NE, 120/1 NE, etc… This yarn is thinner than a needle and with the twists of 30 or more TPI (twist per inch).
2. Doubling and Twisting – This 100% cotton yarn is then doubled or made into 2 plies with the same yarn (taking two threads and making it one) on a TFO – Two for One machine. Once the doubling process is done, it is set on a twisting machine to twist the yarn using the “Z-Twist method” with a minimum of 36 Twists per inch (TPI) or more hence it is called a High Twist 100% cotton yarn.
3. Gassing – As soon as the doubling and twisting process is done, this cotton yarn has to be passed through fire flames on the Gassing machine to burn the extra cotton fibers on the yarn and make it clean so that final Swiss voile Sudanese toub made out of this 100% cotton yarn looks very clean.
4. Warping – Using the final Gassed High twist cotton yarn, a beam pipe/roll is prepared on highly automated warping machines. Before the conned yarn is set on the warping machine, it goes through the heating process in a boiler at 90 degrees Celsius for 60 minutes. This is done to maintain the evenness in yarn during the warping process.
5. Weaving – The plain weave Swiss voile Sudanese toub is a grid-like format, with horizontal yarns (also known as weft yarns) floating over and under vertical (or warp) yarns. Other than plain weave, Swiss voile fabric is also being made in dobby and jacquard designs.
6. Dyeing/Printing – Sudanese Toub is generally made in two forms – plain colors and printed designs. Since Sudanese women love colors, there is no limitation to plain color options in Sudanese toubs. Also, thousands of printed Sudanese Toub are made by Pure Weave Fabrics to be offered to clients across Sudan, Dubai, Europe, the USA, and other parts of the world.
7. Finishing and Packing – Over the years with the evolution of fashion trends, Sudanese women have started demanding toubs in a variety of finishes like crisp finish, perfume finish, etc… After finishing, Toubs are packed in 5-yard pieces and dispatched to the client.
